The first bit of winter snow has fallen in The Netherlands. It was also our very first snowfall experience! The best part is, snow was literally on our doorstep.
Why do South Africans get so excited about snow? Let me explain.
Snow is special because most South Africans only see snow a handful of times in their entire life – as in 2 to 3 times (5 if you’re lucky). From Cape Town, we traveled 3 hours, for a 3-hour adventure. We even took a day off work. We all dream of a white Christmas, snow fights, fairy lights, and snowmen.
South Africans, especially Capetonians, freak out at the sight of snow. In fact, most even get excited when our mountains tops are trickled with snow. Now imagine how excited we were when we heard it was snowing in The Netherlands! I started a countdown immediately.
How was our snow experience?
Apart from the glorious cold, white, mooshy and slippery aftermath, it truly was how I’ve always imagined… children on sleds, snow fights, carols and burning fireplaces. I am extremely blessed to have had this experience.
